Privacy Policy
Last updated: 17 July 2026
KnotweediD ("we", "the app") helps you identify Japanese knotweed and manage what you find. We've built it to collect as little as possible and to keep your data under your control. This policy explains what we handle and why.
The short version
- You don't need an account to use the app.
- Your checks, maps and reports are stored on your device.
- Photos are processed to identify the plant; we don't sell your data or show ads.
- You can permanently delete everything at any time from Settings → Delete my data.
- If you ask us to arrange a survey, you choose to share your contact details with an accredited specialist - and only then.
Photos you take or upload
When you run an identification, your photos are sent to our plant-identification provider (Pl@ntNet) purely to return a result. They are not used to identify you and are not published.
Photos and reports you save are stored locally on your device unless you choose to share them.
Expert surveyor review (Confirmed Report or iD Pro)
If you buy a one-off Confirmed Report or subscribe to iD Pro and submit a case, the photos you choose are uploaded to our secure backend so that a PCA CSJK accredited surveyor can review them and return a verdict. We also send your store purchase receipt, so we can check the purchase is genuine before creating the case, and - if you've allowed notifications - an anonymous device token so we can tell you when the verdict is ready. This data is used only to provide that review and to notify you of the result.
Your risk-assessment answers and your site maps stay on your device. They're written into the PDF report you download, but they are never sent to us.
You can erase your submitted cases and photos from our servers at any time using Settings → Delete my data.
Booking a survey (optional)
The app lets you request a professional knotweed survey. This is entirely optional and only happens if you fill in the form and tick the consent box. When you do, the details you enter - your name, address, postcode, phone number and email, plus any notes - are sent to us and passed to an accredited Property Care Association (PCA) member so they can contact you to arrange the survey.
We share these details for that single purpose. We don't use them for marketing or sell them, and you can ask us to delete your enquiry at any time by emailing contact@knotweedidentification.co.uk. The survey itself is a service provided by the PCA member, who is responsible for the data once it reaches them.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, we store an anonymous device token so we can tell you when your iD Pro verdict is ready. It isn't linked to your identity and is removed when you delete your data or disable notifications.
Location
If you add map markers, the app uses your location to place them. Your maps are stored on your device. We don't track your location in the background, and we never collect your location unless you choose to place a marker.
Maps are drawn by Google Maps, so the coordinates you are viewing or have marked are sent to Google to render the map. When your report includes a site map, those marked coordinates appear in the PDF you download. Google's handling of that data is covered by the Google Privacy Policy.
Payments
A Confirmed Report and iD Pro are purchased through the store you installed the app from - Apple's App Store on iPhone and iPad, or Google Play on Android. Payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google - we never see or store your card details.
When you submit a case for surveyor review, the app sends the store's purchase receipt (a token, not your card details) to our backend so we can verify the purchase before creating your case. iD Pro is an auto-renewing monthly subscription; you can cancel it at any time in your App Store or Google Play account settings.
Website analytics & advertising measurement
Our website (not the app) uses Google's advertising tag to measure how well our adverts perform - for example, whether a visit came from one of our Google ads. This involves Google setting cookies in your browser on this site. It applies to the website only: the app contains no advertising or analytics trackers. You can read how Google uses this data in the Google advertising privacy policy, and you can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings.
What we don't do
- We don't sell or rent your data.
- We don't show third-party advertising.
- We don't require an account or social login.
Your rights and deleting your data
You can access, correct or delete your data at any time. The quickest route is Settings → Delete my data in the app: it clears everything stored on your device and permanently erases any surveyor cases and photos you have submitted from our servers. Nothing is kept in an archive afterwards.
You don't need an account to use KnotweediD, so there is no account to close. If you would rather we did it for you - or you no longer have the app installed - email contact@knotweedidentification.co.uk with the case reference shown on your report (for example KD-1042) and we will erase it and confirm by reply. We aim to action deletion requests within 30 days.
